John Speth

John Speth is a skilled businessman and consultant with senior level experience in strategic analysis and planning, marketing, business development, operations, change management, and organizational development. He is also a cofounder of Inner Circle Partners, and is the President of its Mesa, Arizona office. ICP is a strategy and business development company that specializes in helping clients expand their markets by developing business strategies, systems, and the people who use them.

Since 1997, Mr. Speth has led change and market development campaigns for clients throughout the US and Canada. He has worked closely with the presidents and executive teams of more than 70 organizations, including an INC 500 and four of the fastest growing companies in the state of Utah. His experience includes executive-level management, as well as consulting and business development work, through which he developed the skills to identify key indicators of success within organizations and then design the systems, structures, processes, and strategies of the company to achieve desired results. The following list highlights some of these results:

  • $20 million in US division sales growth, increasing net income from 5 to 10% in two years
  • Developed 30+ strategic business plans to generate expansion in excess of $50 million
  • Led a 30-person, cross functional design team to develop and implement lean manufacturing in a company's print and online publishing divisions (27 departments), reduced production cycle from 15 months down to 12 months
  • Reduced production waste and rework by nearly 30% through the development of a team incentive program in a $35 million, 900-employee organization
  • Developed comprehensive financial analysis spreadsheet software to create proforma budgets, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow analysis
  • Guided a start-up retail company in achieving its goals, resulting in nationwide expansion and the sale of the company in less than two years
  • Guided two Fixed Base Operators (FBOs) at airports in Utah and Montana to develop new facilities valued in excess of $1.7 million
  • Assisted in the start-up and growth of a company's Canadian division, resulting in an $80 million sale within six years

Mr. Speth's education, combined with his work in strategic and organizational development, have provided him with extensive project management experience and strong business skills, including marketing, operations, human resources, sales, and finance. He has developed a strong working knowledge of the skills necessary to succeed in business and confidently exhibits exemplary leadership and management abilities.

John Speth expanded ICP operations through the opening of the Mesa, Arizona office in 2003. Prior to this, he was actively involved in the leadership of economic development activities throughout the state of Utah. As a member of the Mountainlands Economic Summit Design Team, he volunteered with other business, government, educational, and community leaders to develop and implement solutions designed to enhance the economic vitality of the Central Utah region and the state of Utah.

As a result of projects with the Utah Department of Workforce Services, the Commission for Economic Development in Orem, the Small Business Development Centers in Sandy and Orem, and other business and community contacts, Mr. Speth identified a number of needs and gaps throughout the Utah business environment. Arising from these needs, Mr. Speth and his partners developed a series of seminars and workshops, called the Business Development Series, to teach business leadership, organizational development, and entrepreneurial skills to a variety of participants, including businesses, government agencies, and community groups. He has continued to conduct these workshops in the Mesa, Arizona area in conjunction with local business organizations and other service provider firms. More than 2,500 participants have attended these workshops.

Mr. Speth gained his first entrepreneurial experiences growing up on a Black Angus cattle ranch in the Bitterroot Valley of western Montana. There among the tall grass, as a 15 year old, he started his first business raising rabbits for cancer research, selling them to a local laboratory for a whopping $9 apiece! Thus began his first "hair" raising lesson in strategy: The Tale of the Runaway Rabbits--one of the favorite stories requested by clients and workshop participants alike!

From that hardworking beginning, he developed his commitment to "add value every hour of every day." He went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Business Management and a Masters Degree in Organizational Behavior (basically an MBA with emphasis in Strategy, Organizational Development, and Entrepreneurship), both from the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University.

Mr. Speth is an avid researcher and observer of organizational life. He enjoys designing tailored approaches to help individuals and organizations become ever more effective. When he is not helping a client or is not involved in church or community activities, you will likely find him camping, hiking, fly fishing, or Dutch oven cooking in the great outdoors. He is a consummate student of western history and enjoys exploring and telling stories about known and lesser known old-west historical sites, mining districts, and the characters behind them. A restless fellow, his other passions include wood turning, welding, gold prospecting, and blacksmithing.

In 1998, a number of clients and fellow outdoor enthusiasts encouraged him to combine his leadership development skills with his love of the outdoors. As a result, Mr. Speth formed MightyCamper.com, an organization that has since hosted more than 1,000 participants on outdoor retreats and high-adventure workshops to teach outdoor leadership skills and to develop business and life strategies in relaxed outdoor settings.
